Barichara is a little town where time stands still and almost you can see some Guanes (Barichara's native inhabitants) walking around town or spaniards riding their horses (searching gold, of course).

As all colonial towns, Barichara has beautiful chapels and next agust 12 we will there to enjoy the Festival of Baroque Music. If you are around here, come to Bucaramanga, take a car, and you will be in Barichara in less of two hours.

Barichara es un pequeño pueblo donde el tiempo parece haberse detenido y donde casi se pueden ver a los Guanes (habitantes nativos de esta región) caminando por su plaza o quizas algun español cabalgando por sus empedradas calles.

Como todos los pueblos coloniales, Barichara tiene unas hermosas capillas y es alli donde el proximo 12 de agosto podremos disfrutar del segundo Festival de Musica Barroca. Si esta por estos lados, venga a Bucaramanga y estara en Barichara en menos de dos horas.

Caras vemos, corazones no. Una sabia (como todas) frase popular. Esta serie de retratos del pintor Mantilla Caballero inspirada en una de tantas guerras civiles que hemos padecido en nuestro país, La Guerra de Los Mil Días fue expuesta en La Casa del Libro Total y creo que va en contra de esta frase popular mostrando en el fondo los corazones y la vida que dejaron atrás estos combatientes. Quizás creyendo en victorias heroicas o simplemente una buena paga lucharon hasta morir, morir morir y morir en la historia. Hasta hoy, cuando sus rostros volvieron a la vida en manos del pintor.

No trees, the new urban landscape is so sad. A lot of cell phones towers are taking more and more places in our modern world. Do you remember when mobile phones didn't exist? I know, they're useful devices, but sometimes they become major source of stress. Maybe we think it seems that everything was better and memories are black and white and we filter what we do not like.

Nada de arboles, el nuevo paisaje urbano esta lleno de estas torres de teléfonos móviles. Recuerdan hace unos años cuando no existían estos aparaticos? No lo niego, nos han hecho la vida mejor en muchos aspectos pero a veces son la mayor fuente de stress, claro que si, los recuerdos son en blanco y negro y tenemos la ventaja de filtrar las cosas que no nos gustan.

Una foto mas del asado del cual ya les habia mostrado un poco en otra foto. Aqui ya esta la carne de una ternera o novilla preferiblemente. La asan lentamente y van cortando porciones a medida que llegan los clientes. Es jugosa y de un sabor unico. Si van a los llanos no dejen de pedir "ternera a la llanera".

Hace unos meses llego esta nueva habitante de Bucaramanga. Una escultura de Botero (si la ven al fondo? Después publico una mas cercana) traída por la oficina del alcalde. No puedo negarles que causo controversia porque informaron que había sido adquirida por US$1.500.000 y eso es plata. También están los que creen que estas expresiones de arte son importantes pero creo que a la mayoría no les gusto. Pero cuando hemos estado contentos con algo, creo que esa es la naturaleza humana y ahí debe estar la diferencia con otros habitantes de este planeta, el deseo permanente del cambio y buscando siempre algo mejor.

P.S.: envío este post desde el BB, sirve pero es muy lento escribir.

Un nuevo dia comienza y un nuevo fuego se enciende. Este es el inicio de una deliciosa carne tipica de los llanos orientales donde se asa a fuego muy lento unas deliciosas terneras. Pase por este lugar a las 5:25 a.m. pero desafortunadamente hasta ahora estaban poniendo la carne a cocinar. Mañana subo una foto de la carne ya ensartada y empezando a asarse.

A new day begins and a new fire is lit. This is the beginning of a delicious meat, typical of the eastern plains where calfs are roasted over low heat.. I took this picture at 5:25 a.m. but unfortunately I couldn´t eat anything. I will upload a new photo about this delicious plate.

Con mucha tristeza les anuncio que hasta hoy publico este blog debido a que perdí mi cámara fotográfica en el fondo de un río lleno de pirañas. Eh! Pásenla por inocentes.

Ya tienen lista alguna inocentada para hoy? Hoy se celebra el día de los Santos Inocentes y aunque el origen de la fiesta es muy violento, en los países católicos acostumbramos hacer algunas bromas e inocentadas en este día. Los periódicos acostumbran publicar una noticia falsa o tergiversada y al final anuncian "Pásenla por inocentes".

Christmas is, apparently, another holiday. Our Christmas spirit became in consumers spirit and forget the neediest, but I'm watching the CNN program, HEROES, and I can see there are many people who step forward where most of us would give back and run away. Do not stop watching this rewarding show of love and courage that is perhaps the biggest test of our humanity.
The manger represents the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem and is a practice that has gradually lost in our country to move to a more commercial Christmas spirit. This "pesebre" is in the house of my sister-in-law Nylse and it was made with love

La navidad es, al parecer, un día festivo más en el año. Nuestro espíritu navideño se convirtió en espíritu "consumidor" y olvidamos a los más necesitados, pero hoy estoy viendo el programa de CNN, HEROES y puedo ver que hay muchas personas que dan un paso adelante donde la mayoría de nosotros lo daríamos atrás y huiríamos. No dejen de ver esta gratificante muestra de amor y valentía que es quizás la mayor prueba de nuestra humanidad.

El pesebre representa el nacimiento de Jesús en Belen y es una costumbre que poco a poco se ha perdido en nuestro país para dar paso a una navidad más comercial que espiritual. Este pesebre está en la casa de mi cuñada Nylse y fue hecho con mucho amor.

Water is life but water is death too. The number of deaths caused by torrential rains this year in Colombia has risen to 281, the Red Cross has said. The two rainy seasons of 2010 have destroyed 40 national highways and many bridges, medical centres, schools and a million hectares of crops. It is raining right now in Bucaramanga.

"Weeks of rainfall — and the breach of an important canal levee — has caused flooding that has killed 257 people and affected more than 1.9 million residents, or nearly 5% of the population. An exact count of those left homeless by water damage in several parts of Colombia was unavailable, but the total is believed to be in the tens of thousands." Los Angeles Times

El agua es vida pero tambien muerte. El numero de muertes causadas por torrenciales lluvias en nuestro pais llega a las 281, ha dicho la Cruz Roja. Dos temporadas de lluvia este año han destruido 40 vias nacionales y una gran cantidad de puentes, centros medicos, escuelas y mas de un millon de hectareas de cultivos. En este momento llueve en Bucaramanga y existe el temor de deslizamientos y que algunos rios se desborden. Dos vias de acceso a la ciudad están bloqueadas desde hace 4 dias por deslizamientos y puentes afectados. Ojala no haya mas sufrimiento por este invierno en nuestro pais.

We just call them "bocadillos" and they are really delicious. The most famous are made in Velez, a litlle town betwen Bucaramanga and Bogota. They are reach in Vitamin C. Guava is an american fruit and it has a book too, "El olor de la Guayaba" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Aqui simplemente los llamamos "Bocadillos" y son deliciosos. Los mas famosos los hacen en Velez, un pequeño pueblo en la via entre Bucaramanga y Bogota. La guayaba es rica en Vitamina C. La guayaba es una fruta americana y es miy importante porque tambien tiene un libro, "El olor de la Guayaba" de Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

I imagine that you are thinking I'm in the middle of the jungle, and even so it looks like it, I'm in the Colombian Llanos in the Orinoco region through a vast region that occupies the eastern Colombia and western Venezuela. Endless plains full of mineral resources, that have been misused for ranching where nature was never important.

This bridge is on the way to a new oil well (2.200 barrels/day) near Monterrey, Casanare.

Me imagino que pensaran que estoy en medio de la selva, y aunque asi lo parezca, estoy en los llanos colombianos en medio de la Orinoquia una region inmensa que ocupa el oriente colombiano y el occidente venezolano. Son llanuras interminables llenas de riquezas minerales que han sido mal utilizadas para ganaderias extensivas donde la naturaleza nunca fue importante. Este puente que trata de mover una grua se encuentra en el camino a un nuevo pozo petrolero cerca a Monterrey, Casanare que se espera produca 2.200 barriles/dia.

Every morning this bird knocks on my window as if he would like to come and tell me something.

It seems to be a "Streaked Flycatcher, Myiodynastes maculatus, is a passerine bird in the tyrant flycatcher family. It breeds from eastern Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago south to Bolivia and Argentina."

Todas las mañanas esta ave toca en la ventana de mi casa como si pidiera que la dejaran entrar.
Parece ser un Atrapamoscas rayado, tambien llamado Bienteveo o Siriri rayado y emite una variedad de trinos poco musicales.

Mexican culture had been a big influence in all Latin American and all the world. Don´t you like a tasty cup of hot chocolate in the morning? Tacos, fajitas, chocolate and a lot of wonderful things come from that great country, as their music, "Los Mariachis" singing "rancheras". Bucaramanga has a lot of great Mariachis, like this one, "Guadalajara 2000", maybe the best in Bucaramanga. People likes to hear Mariachis in their birthday, marriage and all kind of celebration and usually they play a "serenata" at midnight. Viva Mexico!

La cultura mexicana ha sido por siempre una gran influencia para Latinoamérica y todo el mundo. O no disfruta de una deliciosa taza de chocolate caliente al desayuno? Tacos, fajitas y muchas más cosas maravillosas, como su música, Los Mariachis cantando "rancheras". En Bucaramanga hay una gran cantidad de Mariachis, pero el que se ve en esta foto es quizás el mejor, "Guadalajara 2000". A la gente le gusta llevar Mariachis para su cumpleaños, matrimonio y prácticamente cualquier celebración. En muchos casos tocan una "serenata" a la medianoche con sus trompetas y sus violines. Viva México!

Playing with lights, like a child. I'm so amazing about a good news in Bucaramanga. Healing The Children, Michigan, Ohio, Chapter will visit us tomorrow to heal hurting children (harelip and burns).
Since 1985, Healing the Children has been sending medical volunteers around the world to treat children in their home countries.

They say: "the sweetest, most compelling reward is always the scene outside the clinic on the first day of work. It’s the same each time: hundreds of people quietly standing in line, their children at their sides or in their arms. Many of them will have traveled for days to reach the clinic; now they patiently wait for the doors to open, hoping that this will be the day their children will be healed."
"Healing The Childre" are really special people making happy thousands of children every year.

Jugando con luces como un niño. Hoy quede muy impresionado con una buena noticia en Bucaramanga. HEALING THE CHILDREN es una organizacion norteamericana que visita nuestra ciudad para atender a niños con labio leporino y secuelas de quemaduras. En una semana operan a 200 niños con la ayuda de profesionales locales (como el Dr. Gabriel Gutierrez que me comento sus experiencias con este grupo).

At this place they are building The Sogamoso River Dam, the reservoir will be between those mountains. Some people are against this dam, but it´s a reality now. Sogamoso river flows into the Magdalena river, the main way where the spaniards came to the colombian Andes.

En este lugar se construye la Represa del Rio Sogamoso, el embalse estara entre esas dos montañas. Algunos estan en contra de esta represa, pero ya es una realidad, el rio Sogamoso vierte sus aguas en el rio Magdalena, la principal ruta por la que los españoles entraron a los Andes colombianos.

One year ago I had a visit from nature. A young Green Iguana (Iguana iguana) was eating my orchideas (a beautiful flower, in fact) and I took it to other tree. Iguanas are a prehistoric kind of animals that we have the pleasure to see often where I live. National Geographic says:
"Green, or common, iguanas are among the largest lizards in the Americas, averaging around 6.5 feet (2 meters) long and weighing about 11 pounds (5 kilograms).

They are also among the most popular reptile pets in the United States, despite being quite difficult to care for properly. In fact, most captive iguanas die within the first year, and many are either turned loose by their owners or given to reptile rescue groups."

Hace un año tuve una visita de la naturaleza. Una joven Iguana (Iguana iguana) que se estaba comiendo mis orquideas (exactamente unas flores!). Las Iguanas son unos animales casi prehistoricos y el cual tenemos el placer de ver muy seguido donde vivo.
Segun National Geographic:
Verde, o comunes, las iguanas se encuentran entre los lagartos más grandes en las Américas, con un promedio alrededor de 62 metros de largo y un peso de alrededor de 11 libras (5 kilos).

También están entre las mascotas más populares en los Estados Unidos, a pesar de ser muy difíciles de cuidar adecuadamente. De hecho, la mayoría de las iguanas en cautiverio mueren dentro del primer año, y muchas son soltadas por sus dueños o dadas a grupos de rescate de reptiles ".

We were surprised when we saw this picture (look left leg) taken by my son Juan Fernando. Beyond disability, a bird who faces its reality and fights against it. This little bird is a "Blue-gray Tanager", Thraupis episcopus a medium-sized South American songbird of the Tanager family, Thraupidae. Its range is from Mexico south to northeast Bolivia and northern Brazil, all of the Amazon Basin, except the very south. It has been introduced to Lima (Peru). On Trinidad and Tobago, this bird is called Blue Jean, and we call it "Azulejo".

Quedamos sorprendidos al ver esta foto (miren la pierna izquierda) tomada por mi hijo Juan Fernando . Mas alla de su discapacidad, un ave que enfrenta su realidad y lucha contra ella. Este pequeño pajaro es una Tangara azulada (Thraupis episcopus). Se distribuye desde México hacia el sur, hasta el noreste de Bolivia y el norte de Brasil; en toda la Cuenca Amazónica, excepto el extremo sur. En Trinidad y Tobago, esta ave es llamada "Blue Jean" y aqui la llamamos Azulejo.

It was a surprise, Blanquita´s daugther, our neighbor, gave us a beautiful Chamber Concert last friday. They played music by Mozart and a beautiful Pizzicato, something that I had never heard. Pizzicato in YOUTUBE

Fue una sorpresa, la hija de Blanquita, nuestra vecina, nos ofrecio un bello concierto en el parque del conjunto donde vivimos. Interpretaron musica de Mozart y un bello Pizzicato, algo que nunca habia escuchado. Pizzicato en YouTube.

"Se llama Música de Cámara a aquélla que se interpreta con "pocos" instrumentos, otra vez nos encontramos con una definición un tanto subjetiva, pues uno se pregunta ¿Cuántos son pocos? La respuesta es que desde uno hasta menos de los necesarios para interpretar una sinfonía. Aunque como vimos hay sinfonías que requieren de relativamente pocos instrumentos, es decir, las primeras sinfonías de Haydn o de Mozart, e inclusive de Schubert."

A friend has gone. He was with us in his first year and he teached us what is loyalty without ask nothing else than a little love. Our house was full of happines with him and we always gave him love (even when he made his mischief around the house). He was my partner every day, every time, barking to get a ride. An absurd accident took his life. I buried him today at morning with his favorites toys, a puppet and a glove that he had since his first month. Bye bye little dog, we´ll remember you forever.

Un amigo se fue, nos acompaño en su primer año de vida y nos enseño que es lealtad sin pedir nada a cambio. Su felicidad llenaba la casa cuando llegabamos y siempre conto con nuestro cariño (aun, cuando hacia sus diabluras por la casa). Me acompañaba todo el dia, me ladraba para que lo mirara y le diera un paseo. Un accidente le arrebato la vida. Hoy lo sepultamos con sus juguetes preferidos, un muñeco y un guante que tenia desde su primer mes. Hasta pronto perrito, te vamos a recordar por siempre.

We had a strange visit last sunday in Bucaramanga. Around 3:10PM we were awestruck when the clear sky was cracked open by a massive fireball which caused a massive explosion. Colombian air force helicopters were commissioned to fly over the vicinity to try to locate the source of the explosion but they didn´t find anything. What was it? I think that it was a little asteroid and broke the sound barrier.

Instead, I had a huge explotion in my blog yesterday when I recived a massive visit thanks to BLOGS OF NOTE. Thanks to everybody and I´ll wait for your visit again and again.

This is the Narai Restaurant's inside. As you can see, it has a 360° view in a warm place with an acceptable lunch. They sell a typical hot beverage made from "panela".

El picacho is a higher peak at 35 miles from Bucaramanga, reaching an altitude of 3400 meters above sea level (Bucaramanga is at 980 AMSL). I took a ride there with my family last sunday and we had lunch in the Paramo de Berlin (not in Germany, obviously)..

Raquira was called by the conquerors as "Pueblo de Olleros" (Town of Potters) as its native name means too (City of Pots). This photo was taken by my eldest son, Juan Fernando, in Raquira, a little town where you can buy all kind of things made in clay.

Spanish for "Cape of sails". Its name derives from the first view of the cape from the sea, when the pale colors of the promontories an their curvaceous forms emerging from the flat desert, suggested vaguely to the Spanish the shape of a sailboat.
Cabo de La Vela ("Jepirra" in wayuunaiki language) is a sacred place to the Wayuu indians (who still live there), since they believe it is the place where the souls of all the deceased travel to rest with the ancestors, as the gate to afterlife.
I agree, it most be a wonderful place to rest in peace.
Remember: I had to take this photos with my cell phone becuase I couldn't bring my camera.

As a visitor to my Flickr page says, it seems pure rally. This is part of the Guajira Desert. The area holds immense coal reserves, exploited in a zone known as El Cerrejon. The area is also home to the indigenous Wayuu people and a variety of desert flora and fauna.

Colombia, like this photo, is a country full of colors and contrasts. I was in La Guajira, the Alta Guajira, and found a completely different country. Indians who still speak their language and preserve their ancient customs, the Wayuu. New Landscapes for me, vast deserts and desolate.
I found this little house by chance in a stop of the vehicle I was traveling. I was impressed by the contrast of colors, the fence of sticks and the loneliness of the scene.

Colombia, como esta foto, es un pais lleno de colores y contrastes. Viaje a la Guajira, la Alta Guajira, y encontre un pais completamente diferente. Indigenas que aun hablan su lengua y conservan sus costumbres milenarias, los Wayuu. Paisajes nuevos para mi, desiertos extensos y desolados. Esta pequeña casa la encontre por casualidad en una parada del vehiculo en que viajaba que paro justo frente a ella para revisar la carga. Me impresiono el contraste de colores, la cerca de palos y la soledad de la escena.

It seems to be a prehistoric fruit as many things in the tropics (somebody said presidents?). It is a delicous fruit and the only way to eat it, it´s with your hands. In this photo you see some small Zapotes.

Its latin name is "Quararibea cordata" and it is a brown, round and flattened fruit with a sweet, juicy orange pulp. Fruit is highly esteemed in some areas, and rarely known outside of South America.

Yesterday we were celebrating the "Day of the Candles" in honor of the Virgin Mary. This day is the unofficial start of the Christmas season in Colombia. Everybody places candles and paper lanterns on their windows, balconies, porches, sidewalks, streets, parks and squares, in short, everywhere they can be seen as we can see in this picture taken by "Ofaic".

In fact, today is a holyday in Colombia and of course, as you know, I'm spending my day sitting in front of my laptop searching web pages about pictures, listening music and so on.

This is a strange tree and its Latin name is FICUS DENDROCIDA, meaning murderer tree or Mata Palos in Spanish. It hugs the tree and kills it slowly. Meanwhile, the ficus Dendrocida will grow taking the place of the old tree.

This little bird that has a wonderful colors is a misterious thing. If you can see it, it would be always with its partner and it's very nervous. But I've seen it like a pet twice and without birdcages or anything else. This one was in Puerto Boyaca (a little town on the Magdalena River) and made its nest where you can see and enjoy it.

Esta pequeña ave de un color tan llamativo siempre me ha intrigado. Si la ven pasar siempre esta en compañia de su pareja y es muy nerviosa. Pero a la vez he visto en dos oportunidades como se adapta a las personas convirtiendose en mascota sin necesidad de jaulas o mutilaciones. Colombians have to pay a high price to use our roads, an expensive fuel and a lot of tolls. Anyway, it's a great pleasure go around Colombia and visit a lot of diferent places and people. This toll is placed in the Axle of Coffe and it's made of GUADUA, a kind of Bamboo. The Guadua is from our andeans forests and it's used to make hand made crafts, houses, bridges and a lot of things.

En Colombia tenemos que pagar un alto precio por viajar en carretera, un combustible costoso y un gran numero de peajes. Pero en fin, sigue siendo un gran placer viajar y conocer nuestro bello pais. Este peaje en el eje cafetero esta construido con Guadua que es un bambu originario de america usado en la construccion, artesanias y muchas cosas mas.

This is my third picture about mules, but this one was taken in "La Linea" one of the highest peaks in the colombian Andes. The mule is an important animal here and it is used every day to help to move food and goods climbing or descending the steep mountains of our country always guided for their muleteers.

In my trip to the Valle del Cauca department I had to pass by Armero, a little city that disappeared by an avalanche in 1985. 25,000 people lost their lives in the middle of the night, nearly 95% of the population. I do not like taking sad pictures, but this one is a reminder of how fragile life is and the force of nature.

En mi viaje al Valle del Cauca pase por lo que antes era la ciudad de Armero la cual desaparecio literalmente de la noche a la mañana por una avalancha originada en la erupcion del volcan Arenas. 25000 personas perdieron la vida en medio de la noche, casi un 95% de la poblacion. No me gusta tomar fotos tristes pero esta nos hace recordar lo fragil que es la vida y la fuerza de la naturaleza.

This is my rear view as passanger in this travel. This time we were carrying 35 tons of Palm Oil from Bucaramanga to Palmira (Valle). We had to cross "La Linea", a high pick in the Colombian Andes. Do you know? in our country, weather can change within minutes, it's something called "thermal floors" and it's simple, if you climb a mountain, you can feel low temperatures (5 degrees or less) and if you down, you will feel heat, something like 20 or 35 degrees. No problem, you don´t have to wait months for cold or hot, just move around your city.

Esta es mi vista hacia tras como nuevo pasajero de la Columbia CL120. Esta vez llevabamos 35 toneladas de aceite de palma de Bucaramanga a Palmira. Teniamos que atravesar "La Linea", un alto pico en Los Andes Colombianos. Sabes? En nuestro pais el clima puede cambiar en pocos minutos, es algo llamado "Pisos Termicos". Es sencillo, si sube una montaña, puede tener bajas temperaturas (5 grados o menos) y si baja de altura, va a sentir calor (20 o hasta 35 grados). NO hay problema, no tiene que esperar meses por el frio o el calor, simplemente de una vuelta alrededor de su ciudad y listo.

I don`t know if there is another place in the world where old JEEPS are an important part in the life of many people, but here,in Colombia, it that happens. They even work very hard and have to carry people, coffe and everything that you can find in our farms.

No se si hay otro lugar en el mundo donde los antiguos JEEP sean parte importante de la vida de tanta gente, pero aqui en Colombia eso si pasa. Estos JEEP aun trabajan y muy fuerte, tienen que mover gente, cafe y cualquier cosa que se encuentre en una finca.

This is one of the oldest houses in Bucaramanga and it was restored by a private company for cultural events and as a large digital library. It's placed just in front of the The Chapel of the Dolores.
As you can see my past blogs have been with other people's photos because I broke my camera. I am in the process of buying a new and better camera.

Esta es una de las casas mas antiguas de Bucaramanga y fue restaurada por una empresa privada para eventos culturales y como una gran biblioteca digital. Esta ubicada justo al frente de La Capilla de Los Dolores.
Como pueden ver mis últimos blogs han sido con fotos de otras personas pues mi cámara se cayo y se daño el lente. Estoy en el proceso de comprar una nueva y mejor cámara. Espero que mi presupuesto alcance.

It's nice to find an original view of a well know place. This is the Floridablanca main park. Floridablanca belongs to the Metropolitan Area of Bucaramanga and it's famous for a dessert called "obleas". I'll show you later some pictures about them.
